On 8 September 2026 Sigma announced the 20-60mm F2.8-4 DG | Contemporary, a full-frame zoom for L-Mount and Sony E. It stands out for an unusually wide starting point (20 mm) and a very modest weight: 375 g on E-mount, 385 g on L-Mount.

It is positioned as a compact alternative to 24-70 mm F2.8 zooms and to typical 20-60 / 20-70 mm kit lenses, with a faster aperture at the wide end than most optics in this class.

The barrel diameter is 72.2 mm. Length at the wide end is 86 mm (L-Mount) or 88 mm (Sony E). The filter thread is 67 mm. The lens extends as you zoom toward 60 mm.

Construction is dust- and splash-resistant; the front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating. Controls are minimal: zoom ring and manual-focus ring only, with no AF/MF switch or lock button.

The formula uses 15 elements in 13 groups, including three aspherical elements and three SLD glasses. A 9-blade rounded diaphragm aims for regular bokeh. Maximum aperture falls from F2.8 at 20 mm to F4 around 40 mm (approximately F3.2 by 24 mm and F3.5 shortly after 28 mm).

Minimum focus distance is 15.8 cm at 28 mm. Maximum magnification reaches 1:2.3 at 35 mm (near half-macro) and remains 1:2.9 at 60 mm.

Early reviews (PetaPixel, Amateur Photographer, DPReview) note consistent sharpness across the range, good flare resistance and limited focus breathing, which helps video. Bokeh is described as acceptable rather than especially creamy.

An HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor provides fast, quiet focusing for both stills and video. On Sony E, continuous AF with third-party lenses remains capped at 15 fps by the camera maker; that restriction does not apply on L-Mount.
There is no optical stabilization; the lens relies on in-body IS.

Against the Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G (heavier and more expensive, constant F4) and the Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm F3.5-5.6 (slower), the Sigma offers a useful compromise: wider and faster at the wide end than a classic 24-70 mm, more compact than a 24-70 mm F2.8, and capable of useful close-ups.

It suits travel and reportage photographers and hybrid photo-video users who prefer lightness and a 94.5° field of view at 20 mm over a constant aperture or extra telephoto reach.

In short, Sigma has redefined the everyday zoom around a 20 mm starting point, without the bulk usually associated with full-frame standard zooms.
