On 15 September 2026, Sony announced two G Master prime lenses for full-frame E-mount cameras: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. Both stand out for a weight under 1 kg (tripod foot removed), unusual compactness in this class, and a design explicitly intended for handheld shooting.

They are aimed primarily at wildlife, bird, sports and aviation photographers who need substantial reach without the bulk and mass of Sony’s existing 400mm F2.8 and 600mm F4 G Master lenses.

The two lenses share the same barrel diameter (108 mm) and 95 mm front filter thread. The 400mm measures 242 mm in length and weighs 994 g; the 600mm is only 21 mm longer (263 mm) and just one gram heavier (995 g).

Sony has shifted the centre of gravity toward the camera body, close to the mount and the removable tripod collar. This balance aids tracking of moving subjects and reduces fatigue during extended handheld sessions. Construction is dust- and moisture-resistant; the front element receives a fluorine coating.

- 400mm F4.5: 22 elements in 16 groups, including three Super ED and one ED glass elements.
- 600mm F6.3: 24 elements in 17 groups, using the same special-glass combination.

Both employ Nano AR Coating II to control flare and ghosting. An 11-blade circular aperture is designed to produce smooth bokeh. Minimum focus distance is identical at 2.5 m.

Early field reports (PetaPixel, Amateur Photographer, DPReview) note high sharpness wide open and effective control of chromatic aberration, consistent with G Master standards.

Autofocus, Stabilization and Teleconverters

Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors deliver fast, precise and quiet autofocus, compatible with the high burst rates of the α9 III (up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking) and α1 II. Optical SteadyShot (OSS) offers several modes, including Active mode, and works in concert with in-body stabilization.

Both lenses accept Sony’s 1.4× (SEL14TC) and 2× (SEL20TC) teleconverters:

Pre-orders are open. First shipments are expected in October 2026 (9 October in Japan). Each lens ships with a removable tripod collar, hood and soft case.

These primes are Sony’s answer to the Nikkor Z 400mm F4.5 VR S and 600mm F6.3 VR S, while being lighter and, in the case of the 400mm, substantially more affordable. They also serve as a more compact and lighter alternative to 200-600mm or 100-400mm zooms, at the cost of a slower maximum aperture and the loss of zoom flexibility.

The 400mm F4.5 is the most accessible entry into G Master super-telephoto photography. The 600mm F6.3 delivers greater reach in a nearly identical package.

Together they significantly expand handheld wildlife and sports options on the Sony E system without requiring the heavy, high-cost professional primes.
